What not to do during a road rage encounter

On Behalf of | Sep 4, 2024 | Car Accidents

Technology has increased driving safety dramatically in recent decades. Nonetheless, driving still remains a hazardous activity.

One type of situation which can be dangerous, and is unfortunately on the increase, involves road rage incidents. Road rage involves aggressive behavior from drivers and sometimes passengers. Examples of this behavior include tailgating, excessive honking of the horn, rude gestures, threats and even violence.

How you handle an encounter like this can greatly impact your personal safety. Here’s what not to do.

Don’t fight fire with fire

Aggressive responses do not reduce aggressive behaviors. In fact, an aggressive response to a person exhibiting road rage is almost certain to make the situation worse. Instead, try to remain as calm as possible. Focus on your driving and remaining safe. If you need to, think about coming to a safe stop.

Don’t leave the vehicle

For the most part, your vehicle is the safest place you can be during a road rage encounter. You may be tempted to get out and reason with the other driver, without any intention to argue or fight. Nonetheless, the driver could take your leaving the vehicle as a sign that you want to engage in an argument or even physical confrontation.

Outside of your vehicle, you do not have a protective shell. If the road rager does decide to attack you, then you could be seriously injured or even killed. The sad reality is that road rage-related homicides are rapidly increasing.

Road rage often involves a collision of some type, whether accidental or intentional – for example, ramming another car. If you have been injured in this type of incident, you may be entitled to financial compensation, even if the driver is prosecuted for criminal offenses. Seek legal guidance and discover more about your options.
