It’s hard to ignore the fact that the use of e-bikes has exploded in recent years. In 2022, over 1.1 million e-bikes were sold, quadrupling sales in just three years.
However, with the spike in e-bikes on the road comes an increased risk of accidents, some of which are fatal.
Why the rise in e-bike popularity?
E-bikes are fast becoming a popular choice for cyclists. From daily commuters to weekend warriors, there is an e-bike to fit their needs. People with mobility issues and knee pain have found cycling enjoyable again. For environmentalists, e-bikes offer an eco-friendly alternative to cars.
However, e-bikes come with risks. One of the primary attractions of e-bikes is their ability to reach higher speeds with minimal effort. Most e-bikes can travel up to 28 mph. While this speed is beneficial for commuting, it can also increase the risk of accidents, especially if the rider is inexperienced.
Another issue is the lack of knowledge of basic traffic laws. E-bikes often share the road with motor vehicles, which can already be dangerous. Combining the high speeds of e-bikes, road hazards and heavy traffic can lead to a higher likelihood of a catastrophic collision.
One area of growing concern is the number of pedestrians being hit by e-bike riders. To avoid vehicles, many cyclists ride on city sidewalks crowded with pedestrians. To exacerbate the problem, the bike motors are quieter, and pedestrians may not hear the cyclist until they are beside each other.
Minnesota has enacted several laws regarding e-bikes, including:
- Power output not to exceed 750 watts
- Speeds not to exceed 20 mph
- Persons younger than 15 are not legally allowed to operate an e-bike
Unfortunately, St. Paul hasn’t banned the use of e-bikes on city sidewalks.
Being hit by an e-bike traveling 20 mph can result in severe injuries, including abrasions, fractures and concussions. You may require surgery and therapy, forcing you to miss time at work. Receiving compensation for your injuries can help with expenses during your recovery.
