Every year, thousands of semitrucks drive through The Land of 10,000 Lakes. Despite the breathtaking surroundings, traveling across Minnesota on Route 94 can be risky. The highway has a lot of traffic, speed limits are often exceeded and several ongoing construction projects make driving difficult.
Every day, semitrucks travel alongside automobiles, buses, and motorbikes. Some drivers of smaller vehicles are scared to drive close to semis because of their size. Although this is understandable, a motorist who is confident has a far better chance of safely sharing the road with semitrucks.
What can you do to be safer?
You should employ a few strategies when you’re near a semitruck, whether on or off the highway. These include:
- Keep a safe distance in front of you when following a semitruck.
- Avoid distractions such as your phone, the buttons on the radio, and the drink in your cup. Be vigilant when riding on crowded roads.
- Don’t speed. Maintaining the posted speed limit helps you pay attention to your surroundings.
- Stay alert and aware of your surroundings. If a truck has to pass you, give them enough space to do so by moving into the right lane.
- Avoid the semi truck’s blind regions. The largest blind spot on the truck is its right side, along with the area behind and in front of the cab.
- Never cut a truck off. Compared to cars, semitrucks need twice as much room to stop.
- Alert semitruck drivers when you need to move over by using your signals.
- Be careful when pulling over on the highway. Find a large shoulder or designated pull-off place between highway exits. Many accidents occur when a truck swerves onto the shoulder and swipes a stopped automobile.
Sometimes, an accident is unavoidable. If a semitruck strikes your car, seek assistance with the charges.
